Temporary alcohol ban continues at Conn. recreation areas

DEEP said the temporary alcohol ban between May and August helped mitigate “unruly” behavior at state recreation areas.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Alcohol will continue to be banned at several state parks until November, officials announced Thursday.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) reissued the alcohol ban that was previously in place from May 16 and expired on Aug. 12.

DEEP said the renewed alcohol ban will be in place through Sunday, Nov. 10.

The existing 90-day alcohol ban implemented for the Naugatuck State Forest, which includes the areas commonly known as Seymour Reservoirs no. 1, no. 2, no. 3, and no. 4, and the lands immediately surrounding the reservoirs, is still also still in effect.

DEEP said the alcohol bans were in place after these locations had experienced an increase in crows and alcohol consumption in recent years. This has led to incidents of misconduct, unruly behavior, property damage, trespass, and complaints by other visitors and the surrounding communities.

“DEEP encourages responsible outdoor recreation, and this measure helps to ensure that Connecticut’s state parks, forests, and boat launches are welcoming and family-friendly outdoor spaces,” said DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes.

According to DEEP, the alcohol ban had curtailed “unsafe behaviors and allowed locations to be more welcoming and safe outdoor recreation destinations.”

The temporary ban provides the department’s conversation police with an enforcement tool to help mitigate the inappropriate use of the outdoor recreation areas, DEEP said.
