Catch ‘Lord of the Rings’ Landscapes From the Living Room

Listing of the Day

Location: Queenstown, Otago, New Zealand

Price: NZD$7.35 million (US$4.53 million)

Set atop a knoll, this large rural residence presides over dramatic views of multiple mountain ranges and the Shotover River—other-worldly New Zealand landscapes depicted in “The Lord of the Rings.”

It’s known as Pikorua, a Maori word that means friendship and love, and its design, according to listing agents Sarah McBride and Sarena Glass of New Zealand Sotheby’s International Realty, was inspired by the country’s native forestland.

Designed and built by Michael Wells in 2014, the residence, which was put on the market in February, is distinguished by high, vaulted ceilings and walls of glass that provide illumination and stunning views of the naturalistic setting.

“It’s typical of lifestyle sites in the area, but it offers lovely privacy from neighbors,” Glass said.

McBride added that “the landscaped grounds, established trees and flat lawn” and the fact that the site “drops down to eventually meet the river below” are what make it special.

Set on 9.88 acres, the 4,380-square-foot glass house has five bedrooms and five bathrooms.

The main living spaces of the two-level house have high ceilings, giving the feel of an atrium, and large glass doors and walls of windows bring in the views and a plethora of natural light. In addition to a media room, there are entertainment spaces that lead to the lawn.

There is room for at least a dozen guests: In addition to the guest rooms, the lower level has a bunk room with an en-suite bathroom. Upstairs, there’s a viewing balcony and an office or second living area. A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace dominates the main living space, providing a cozy warmth.

There’s also a double garage that’s accessed from the premises; and there’s a separate laundry.
