GLENDALE, Miss. (WDAM)—The Glendale Recreation Center has undergone many updates since District 2 Supervisor Sharon Thompson took office nearly five years ago.
“We want to provide more recreational areas to the people who live in this area and the entire community,” said Thompson.
Thompson said a brand-new community center was built during her first term. Now, leaders said they re moving on to the outside recreational areas.
“Recreation is always good for any community,” said Thompson. “They need to have recreational facilities, that’s my opinion, and that’s the opinion of the entire Board of Supervisors.”
Since the beginning of 2024, the recreation area in Glendale has received new playground equipment as well as a new walking track that was attached to the existing trail.
The walking track attachment was completed about a month ago.
“I’ve lived out here probably about 30 or 40 years, and I walked on this track, in the back of the building, and I never felt secure,” said Thompson. “So, it was my idea when I became a supervisor that the track needed to be extended to the front of the building for the safety and security of those people who use it.”
Along the back of the grounds, crews have started getting rid of trees to make space for a new basketball or pickleball court. This was all made possible thanks to (American Rescue Plan Act) funds.
“The ground is being cleared and we plan to start construction once we have the necessary quotes required by the government,” said Thompson.
However, these new amenities aren’t the only projects going on in the Glendale community.
Thompson said there had been a continuous effort by the board to address flooding concerns in the area.
“We’ve also filed an application to address the flooding in the Glendale area,” said Thompson. “We’ve submitted paperwork, but we’ve not gotten any type of response on that because I know that that’s first and foremost in a lot of people’s mind.”
Thompson said she feels that it’s important to continue to reinvest in the green spaces in her district.
“I feel like it’s my responsibility to reinvest in Forest County as a whole and District 2 because these are the people that I represent, and I want to represent them to the best of my ability,” said Thompson. “So, by doing that, the board allows us to create these green spaces to make life more livable and a healthier environment for those people that we represent.”
