Our guide will tell you how to get the Lighter in Conscript, where to find Lighter Fluid, and how you can open the Locked Door (Rope) and Supply Trench.
Solving puzzles in Conscript requires the right items, and the Lighter is one of the most useful tools that you can find. Once you open the Pigeon Coop and get yourself a Shotgun, you’ll be able to get the Lighter and open up a whole new area in Chapter 2 — read on to find out how!
How to Get the Lighter in Conscript
You can get the Lighter in Conscript by going to the Sleeping Quarters in the southeast portion of the Support Trench, walking up to the Lockbox in the top right of the room, and entering the code “1895.”
An important note: many of the codes in Conscript are randomized, and I’m unsure if this code is one of them. If it is, I’ve also included the method required to solve the puzzle if the provided code does not work for you.
This map will show you where to find the Lighter and how to get other important items related to it:
The Lighter can be found at location #1, Lighter Fluid can be found at location #2, and the Locked Door (Rope) can be found at location #3. Now, I’ll break down how to get the Lighter, how to get Lighter Fluid, and what you can use the Lighter for.
First, you’ll have to travel to the Sleeping Quarters. This area is accessible from the very start of Chapter 2, so you can get this item right away. However, you won’t be able to get Lighter Fluid until later, so it may be best to wait until you get Lighter Fluid before trying to get the Lighter.
When you get to the Sleeping Quarters, you’ll see a bunch of placards that show Class Years and Age Ranges. This relates to the “Diary Entry” Note that you can find in the Sleeping Quarters. Bernard owns a lighter and put it in his lockbox, and the diary entry says that the code is his birth year.
The placards tell us the age ranges of each class, so we need to find out which one Bernard was in. Examine the table of dog tags in the Sleeping Quarters and you’ll find Bernard’s.
We now know that Bernard Moreau was in the Class of 1914.
Now we need to find out the age range for the class year, which we can get by examining the bulletin board at the top right of the room (just below the lockbox):
This means that Bernard’s graduating class of 1914 is between the ages of 19 and 20. Therefore, the lockbox code will either be:
- 1914 – 19 = 1895
- 1914 – 20 = 1894
Try 1895 and you’ll open up the Lockbox. Unfortunately, it’s a Lighter (Empty) — you’ll need to find some Lighter Fluid.
You can also find the following items in the Sleeping Quarters:
- 3 Cigarettes in a Chest
- 4 Cigarettes in a Barrel
- 1 Bandage in a Chest
How to Get Lighter Fluid
You can get Lighter Fluid in the Fuel Storage Room which is to the west of the Monitor Tunnel. Unfortunately, you’ll need to open up the Pigeon Coop and get the Torch to get there.
First, you’re going to need to get the Torch (Flashlight). Check out our guide on how to get the Torch, because you’ll need it to open up the Pigeon Coop.
Once you have the Torch, you can then get the Pigeon Coop Key and open up the Pigeon Coop. That will give you access to a Lockpick, and the Lockpick can open up the door to the Fuel Storage room (location #2 on our map). We have a guide that will show you how to open the Pigeon Coop and get into the Fuel Storage room, too.
The Fuel Storage room has Lighter Fluid to the left. It also has Fuel (natch), and it leads to a dirty Shotgun that you can clean up and get in working order.
Combine the Lighter Fluid and the Lighter (Empty) in your inventory and you’ll get a Lighter. The Lighter can now be used to light stuff on fire in the right conditions.
How to Use the Lighter
There are two ways to use the Lighter in Conscript:
- Using it to solve puzzles
- Lighting a Fuel spill on the ground
We’ll go over both methods here.
How to Use the Lighter to Light a Fuel Spill
You can use the Lighter to light Fuel that you spill on the ground. Here’s how to do it:
- Stand where you would like to light a fire.
- Use the Fuel item in your inventory.
- Use the Lighter item in your inventory.
- Exit your inventory and a fire will start spreading.
Fire can be used to burn corpses, which helps prevent rats from swarming it. You can also use Fire to erect a barrier that will hurt enemies when they run through it. Keep in mind that fire won’t last forever, so don’t count on it to save you!
How to Use the Lighter to Solve Puzzles
Certain puzzles will require using the Lighter to solve them, such as opening the Locked Door (Rope) in Emergency Control.
How to Open the Locked Door (Rope) in Emergency Control
You can open the Locked Door (Rope) in Conscript’s Emergency Control section by using a filled Lighter to burn the rope away. However, doing this will cause Rats to start spawning in the trenches unless you prevent it by closing rat holes.
Rat Holes can be closed by throwing a Frag Grenade into the Rat Hole. Here’s a map of the Rat Holes in Chapter 2’s Support Trenches area at the time when you get the Lighter working:
As you can see, there are multiple locations where Rat Holes can be found. It’s not very likely that you’ll have enough grenades to close all of them, though; I found two grenades and bought one from the Trader.
I recommend closing the Rat Holes in this order of priority:
- Northern Hole: This serves as a shortcut between the center of the map and the northeast.
- Southern Hole: The close quarters of this area makes fighting rats a pain, so save yourself the trouble.
Closing the other holes is at your discretion.
You should keep in mind that there are several other areas to explore in Chapter 2 and some of those areas have Rat Holes, too. If you can comfortably deal with the Rats, you may want to save your Grenades for later. (You will, of course, also find some more Grenades later on in Chapter 2.)
Once you’ve closed the Rat Holes, you can head to Emergency Control and open up the door using the Lighter. There is a corpse outside, but you can neutralize it by burning it with Fuel as described above. If you don’t, you’ll have to fight a single Rat when you head back through this door.
Rats can infect you and permanently reduce your maximum health until you use a medicine to clear the infection. You’ll want to avoid fighting Rats wherever possible.
How to Open Locked Door (Supply Trench) in Conscript | Where to Find the Supply Trench Key
You can open the door marked “Locked Door (Supply Trench) in Conscript by getting the Supply Trench Key. The Supply Trench Key can be found in the Ruined Blockhouse north of Emergency Control, which can be accessed by using a working Lighter.
Once you’ve used the Lighter to burn away the rope, you’ll be in the Ruined Blockhouse. You’ll find the following items inside this new area:
- 3 Cigarettes
- Supply Trench Key
You can then leave the area and proceed with exploring Chapter 2. Head south of Mess Hall Access and you can open the door in the southern center of the map. Remember, Rats will now spawn all throughout the Support Trench in areas where you have not closed the Rat Holes — be careful!
