Sleep spaces shine in the Solara

When bedrooms meet or exceed the needs of their occupants, the home is a more sustainable fit.

Some floor plans deliver in different areas, but when bedrooms are outgrown or fall short in difference ways, the need for a move-up is quickly in order.

A new show home by Shane Homes in the northeast Calgary community of Cornerstone gives its sleep spaces special treatment. The Solara is a 2,116-square-foot, front-drive, single-family model with three bedroom and 2.5 bathrooms.

All bedroom are substantial in size and boast a walk-in closet. At 12 feet 10 inches by 16 feet two inches, the master bedroom is larger than those in homes of a similar size.

The master’s walk-in closet is accessed from within its ensuite and large enough to function as a dressing room. Among the features in the ensuite are a luxurious glass-encased shower, and deep soaker tub beneath two large side-by-side windows.

It also contains a vanity with two sinks and plenty of surface space between them, creating welcome elbow room and reducing clutter.

Both secondary bedrooms are generously proportioned compared to their counterparts in similar homes. As a result, these spaces support the children of the family through various stages of life, such as their teen years.

These bedrooms are 11 feet 11 inches by 11 feet and 10 feet seven inches by 11 feet two inches, respectively. These bedroom are located a short distance from a full bathroom. There is a laundry room nearby, as well.

The second level is split into wings courtesy a centrally located bonus room. Featuring a soaring vaulted ceiling, the bonus room is presented in the show home with multiple pieces of furniture. There are two windows on the side wall it backs on to, and another two on the wall it faces above the staircase.

This sets up an appealing spot for gathering with family to binge their favourite TV series or hold a board game night.

On the main level, the back stretch is open-concept. In this area, everything revolves around the L-shaped kitchen. It features an island with a sink beneath pendant lighting. This includes an eating bar that accommodates at least three people.

The appliances are paced to allow several people to use the space at the same time. There’s a chimney-style hoodfan above a stove on one wall, and a fridge with french doors and wall oven on another.

In addition to this space, there is an additional spot in the home for meal preparation. Accessed off the primary kitchen is an area often called a spice kitchen.

This is a smaller, enclosed cooking space with a stove, counter, sink and cabinets. Its purpose is to restrict scents from shifting to other ends of the home. Spice kitchens are also handy for tucking away cooking-related messes when guests are present.

The great room and dining area line up along the rear-facing wall. Adding architectural interest, the dining area boxes out.

In the great room, the focal point is an elongated fireplace surrounded by full-height tile.

Just off the foyer is a den that can be used for a variety of purposes. In the show home, it is staged with a desk, cabinets and shelves.
