This Scenic Island Home Gets Creative with Shading Across Its Smart Living Spaces

This project by Advanced Integrated Controls (AIC) seamlessly blends advanced technology with refined design, focusing on motorized shading solutions that enhance both function and style. Situated along the scenic waterfront of Hilton Head Island, the home faces challenges from the intense Western sun and evening glare reflecting off the water. The goal was to merge sleek aesthetics with practical efficiency, meeting the high standards of a tech-savvy homeowner.

According to AIC Vice President Jennifer Hubner, this project was a collaborative effort. The team worked closely with the homeowner, builder, designer, and trim carpenters, customizing each solution to the unique needs of every space. Lutron’s motorized shades provided the flexibility required to address the various design and logistical challenges throughout the home.

“This project stands out for its innovative design and execution of concealed shade pockets, along with the strategic use of exposed shading technology where concealment was not feasible,” Hubner says.

Indoor Shading Creates Unique Home Theater Space for Hilton Head Island Property

A standout feature for the island home is the outdoor living area. Designed for both relaxation and entertainment, it includes an outdoor kitchen, generous seating, and a 65-inch pop-up television ideal for movie nights or sports events. The space required a solution to control the sun’s glare without obstructing the stunning waterfront views. The team installed Insolroll outdoor solar shades powered by Lutron drives, which softened the light while maintaining the view.

Inside, the homeowner’s priority was to keep shades hidden when not in use. Although structural steel limited the options for concealed shades in some areas, the team created recessed pockets in the theater, installing custom shades in a curved wall for a seamless appearance. A 36-foot drapery track for blackout curtains completed the home theater setup, making it a true focal point.

In other areas, the AIC team embraced exposed Lutron Palladiom shades, turning them into a design feature that harmonized with the home’s millwork. With carefully selected fabrics, these shades became a conversation piece among guests. The result is a home that beautifully integrates advanced shading technology with thoughtful design, demonstrating the possibilities of modern smart home innovation.
